So who is this AutismParentSupport person?

I’ve been supporting people all of my working life.

Helping parents of autistic children is the culmination of a path of different explorations of self development and self expression.

When I started exploring the path of support it was as a dancer and choreographer.

Although I loved the world of performance, I soon became more interested in dance as self discovery.  I taught students how to look after themselves and their bodies, and also how to find resources within themselves to bring both to their daily lives and to the creative process.

My teaching delved deep into mind/body connections, both as a physical training and also a well of inspiration.  For many years, I taught a class called “Dance of the Heart”.  Learning to how to work with, and not against the body, became incredibly important and a core principle for AutismParentSupport.

At the same time, I became a student of the More to Life self development programme

where I learned about how our minds work and how our beliefs shape our identity.  More importantly, I learned about how to make changes.  I ran Self-Esteem classes and individual sessions for self-growth.  The knowledge I learned about how to be a “gentle detective” into what makes us tick is invaluable for my work with other parents.

When I moved into a new career, as a Shiatsu therapist, I learned a whole new language of Chinese medicine.

I really enjoyed talking to clients and finding out about their daily lives, so that the benefit of our work together could be really useful.  With all my new knowledge of Chinese medicine, I could also give recommendations about food and exercise which was really supportive.

Even more important was learning about the connection about how we feel and how we act.

Working directly with clients about their emotional issues and their physical issues and getting the results they wanted. I love this work.  I also pursued this as a Self Esteem teacher and leader.

All  of this time I have of course been working on myself.

Whether in the martial art Ki Aikido, the dance form Contact Improvisation or the self development work in More to Life, I have been finding core principles.  These core principles have become the cornerstone of my work.  In a nutshell, one could say it’s about “being with” rather than “going against”; starting with where we are and with an attitude of love and acceptance making space to move on.

When my child was diagnosed with autism, I had a whole lot more learning to do.

I needed lots of input from people who knew much more than me.  But I followed what rang true to my heart.  Stuff based on respect and love.  And although I had all my experience of working with other people, this was a whole new ball game.

The greatest contributor to my learning was finding EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques).

This was the one single greatest gift I was given.  With it, I could take care of my emotional needs and free myself up for my child.  It also helped her as it is so easy and so much fun. I loved it so much I trained to a high practitioner level, and now work with EFT as a core part of my AutismParentSupport programme.  With it, I have been able to bring together all my other learning and develop this support programme for other parents, the support I wish I had had from the beginning.
