The secret to being the best parent ever
Grow yourself.
That’s it.
But you know that don’t you.
However
- you don’t have the time
- you don’t have the money
- you need to put your child first
I agree.
So how about learning a technique that you can do at home without paying anyone, something that can have results in 2 minute sessions (I just used it before starting this article), as well as something that can take you into deep and profound healing over time, something you can do in your head when lying down at night, and that still has results…
Would that be a good idea?
I’m not going to pretend that this is a wonder drug that you swallow and suddenly life is all rosy. Growth doesn’t happen like that. If it was that easy we’d all be skipping along to the sunset with our brood of contented children, our spouse at our side, worries cast aside and the whole world being kind to us…
So you need to care for your sapling self
How? By being able to spot the weeds that are threatening to suffocate you and by feeding yourself the nutrients you need.
The weeds are all stuff going on in your head, all the ways the world isn’t the way it’s meant to be, all the things that have gone wrong or mistakes that you made, and how you feel about that, all the little and huge resentments, the disappointments, the worries and fears….
The nutrients are all the ways you can feed yourself, from taking care of your physical needs for food and shelter, to emotional and spiritual sustinence. Walks in nature, closeness with your children, chats with a friend, prayer and meditation- so many ways…ways that act as sun and air to your tender sapling self…
Here’s where my nifty little tool comes in
When I was at a very dark place, about 4 years ago, I heard of a new “tool”- EFT. I thought it sounded silly, to tell you the truth. I was a Shiatsu practitioner, with 10 years’ experience and proud that I not only knew hundreds of acupuncture points, but when and why I should use them…Plus I was mighty good at subtle energy work, and how could a technique you can teach in 10 minutes with a “one-size-fits-all” protocol, be anything but rubbish? So you can imagine it took me a while to try it out!
What convinced me was that a local practitioner, whom I respected, had had unbelievable results with clearing a life-long and sometimes life-threatening asthma condition, with EFT. I found out that EFT stands for Emotional Freedom Techniques and is the simplest, most elegant and most effective tool I know.
When I went to this practitioner, part of me honestly believed that the best thing I could do for my daughter with autism was to kill myself (why? that’s another story). But I also had enough light on my sapling self to know that I was way out of balance and that I needed help- serious help. So I went to see this lovely lady and you guessed, sorted myself out.
In short, with EFT, I started clearing my weeds and giving myself the nutrients I needed.
Now I want you to know about EFT
The truth is, there are lots of self care methods out there. EFT is just one. Just because I believe in it fully doesn’t mean I think everyone “should” do it. No. But I am fairly passionate! That is because,
- it works
- it’s practical
- it’s free
Oh, and it saved my life.
So here’s how you can find out about it
And then watch this.
That’s it.
Like all the good, simple things of life, EFT also deep and profound. It is endless in its capacity to help your growth and virtually endless in all the variations and ways you can use it.
So let me know if you like this (FB Like button Twitter share hint hint) but more importantly, if you tapped along with me, how it made you feel.
I look forward to the conversation.

Love the analogy of the sapling self, and really clear exercise to do on the video. I was off the 1-10 scale to start with and came on to it at 9 when I had finished your exercise. So more work to do, but at least I have started. Thanks for the reminder that EFT works so well.

Hi from the Special Needs Blog Hop. Taking care of yourself is one of the best things you can do for your family. You can’t be there for them, if you aren’t there for yourself.

Thank you so much Sondra, Jane, Stacie and Tammy
I am SO determined to reach as many parents (and other carers) of ASD children as possible. And of course all SN children. I appreciate your support.

I can see why it looks silly. I hear it all the time with our gentle sensory techniques.
How could something so simple work so well? Right?
I’ll be tapping.
When I did watching your video, I got chills all over. It was fantastic.
Thank you!
